Action Item – Email Senate RE: HB 2334 Martial Arts Tax Exemption TODAY

Help Needed! We’re getting concerned that our bill won’t get a hearing in the Senate. HB 2334, which passed the House Unanimously 96-0, will exempt martial arts from the 9.6{1d96d231ab15286cc2909578709a2dba1f05c1bc2821770822e5433a4504f686} retail sales tax that has been unfairly applied to our students, but it also needs to be passed by the Senate. The Senate Ways and Means Committee needs to “pull” the bill by Monday 02/29. Our lobbyists have spoken with members of the W&M Committee as well as our prime sponsor Rep. Ryu. We have been been told that the W&M Committee is just beginning to hear bills that came over from the House and that they create the daily agenda the day before their hearings. Time is of the essence and we need your help! Please send one email, to Senator Andy Hill, Chair of the Senate Ways & Means Committee TODAY or tomorrow. (See Action Item #1 Below).

Thank you in advance for your support!

With Gratitude,

Mr. Herrman

  • Message =Dear Senator Hill,

I am a member of Alpha Martial Arts in Seattle, WA. During the 2015 session the legislature voted for and passed HB 1550, simplifying the taxation of amusement, recreation and physical fitness services. As a result martial arts schools are now unfairly treated as ‘retail items’ instead of ‘services’ and subject to retail sales tax up to 9.6{1d96d231ab15286cc2909578709a2dba1f05c1bc2821770822e5433a4504f686}. Gymnastics, yoga, dance, tennis, golf, swimming and other instructional lessons are not subject to retail sales tax and martial arts should not be either.

Please support HB 2334 which has been introduced to exempt martial arts from retail sales tax. HB 2334 is currently in the Senate Ways and Means Committee and passed the House of Representatives 96-0. We respectfully request that you schedule a hearing on HB 2334 as soon as possible. The martial arts community will come to Olympia to testify.

Thank you for your consideration and support.

    Sincerely,
    (Your First and Last Name)
